Match.com Introduces MatchMobile Dating Service

Impatient lotharios and time-challenged romance hunters should welcome the launch of online dating service, Match.com’s new MatchMobile text application.

The new service for cell phones sends subscribers text messages when they get a ‘wink’ or e-mail from another Match.com subscriber, and if they don’t like the look of them, they can also search for other potential matches from their mobiles.

“With the new MatchMobile, we’re letting people connect with their matches the same way they connect with their colleagues, friends and family - instantly and through the convenience of a cell phone,” said Thomas Enraght-Moony, CEO of Match.com.

“With MatchMobile, we have changed the dating dynamics. We’ve taken away the waiting and wondering by giving members instant access to not only emails and winks, but also the entire Match.com network, whenever and wherever they are,” he continued.

“Imagine what MatchMobile will do for the business traveler who’s constantly on the go, waiting for a flight home,” piped up Dr. Ian Kerner, a Match.com relationship expert (a what?!)

“They’re thinking of the long, lonely weekend ahead, and suddenly they receive a wink or an email - it could brighten their day and change their Saturday night plans,” he continued in his rather suggestive way.

Perhaps they might even get to indulge in a curious bout of mutual nose-squashing, as seen in their website (see pic).

According to tracking firm M:Metrics, around 3.6 million U.S. cell phones subscribers used a mobile dating service in May 2007, with Frost & Sullivan forecasting that revenue from such services will grow to $215 million by 2009.

Match.com’s first mobile phone dating service was used by nearly half a million subscribers, and the new application will give subscribers access to their database of around 15 million registered users.

The service will launch in the United States, UK and Canadian markets first, with plans to extend the service to nine other countries by the end of 2007.

Channel 4 drops premium-rate phone-in shows

LONDON (Reuters) - Channel 4 said on Wednesday it was dropping all but one of its premium-rate phone-in competitions following an internal investigation that found problems with shows dating back to 2004.
"As a commercially funded public service broadcaster we've previously taken the view that premium rate competitions were a legitimate activity given the demand from viewers to take part," Channel 4's group finance director, Anne Bulford, said.
"But public trust in these competitions has been severely undermined and we do not want to risk further our relationship with our viewers," she said in a statement.

Channel 4, which said it had no evidence to suggest any staff member had direct involvement or knowledge of improper handling of viewer calls, launched its probe after problems with the "You Say We Pay" show were revealed in February. It said its inquiry found problems with the competition dating back to September, 2004.

The broadcaster said that when its "Deal or no deal" show returns on air from August 13 a share of profits will be given to charity.

There were around 30 premium rate television service competitions on Channel 4 and its sister channels in 2006. The current profit forecast for these services for 2007 is in the region of 3 million pounds, the broadcaster said.

Channel 4 said it will continue to use phone voting on its "Big Brother" shows but will only charge viewers enough to cover the cost of the call and any charitable donation.

A string of phone-in related scandals have tarnished reputations across the UK television industry. Last month, media regulator Ofcom said an inquiry had found that premium-rate television programmes and quizzes frequently misled viewers.

Psoriasis & Eczema: Contagious or Not? a New Study: The Effect on Social Lives

The American Academy of Dermatology announced today that the findings of a recent study conclude that beliefs about skin diseases, such as, psoriasis and eczema, have a serious effect on social behavior and other activities like dating, for teens and young adults. The results of the study were presented at the American Academy of Dermatology's Summer Academy Meeting 2007 by dermatologist Alexa Boer-Kimball, MD, MPH, FAAD, assistant professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical school in Boston, MA.

The data was comprised of responses to a questionnaire issued by the National Psoriasis Foundation in October, 2005. The 503 individuals aged 18 through 25 who replied, exemplified a sampling of the general population. Dr. Kimball and her associates examined the information compiled and results are indicative that a high percentage of people are confused about whether psoriasis and eczema are contagious or not. Furthermore, if confronted with a decision in regards to intimacy, most responded that they would be cautious and avoid social and romantic activities. Those who answered that they were aware that psoriasis was not contagious indicated that dating someone with the condition would not be a problem.

A Summary of the Study:

---83% responded that how a person looks played a major part in the decision to date someone.

---62% considered skin condition

---three-fourths said that overall health was also a determining factor

---HIV & herpes vs. Psoriasis & Eczema

Dr. Kimbal found that a very high number of people were knowledgeable that these diseases are more contagious than psoriasis and eczema. However, when you compare the results of those unsure about contagion of any of the conditions, there is a significant difference. For example, 3.9% respondents were unsure if HIV was contagious compared to 36% respondents regarding whether psoriasis was contagious. Herpes, 4.9% compared to eczema at 28%. Dr. Kimbal stated that being that both skin conditions are very hard for patients to conceal, she found it ironic that the diseases that we need to most concerned about are basically invisible.

---85% indicated that they would avoid kissing and being intimate with someone if concerned about contracting an unknown infectious disease.

---40% were unsure when asked specifically about psoriasis, whether it was contagious via casual contact

---one-fourth of those surveyed were unsure of how to respond when confronted with a known health threat

Dr. Kimbal concluded her presentation to the American Academy of Dermatology by stating that the study clearly identified that more education is required for both patients and the general public. Psoriasis and eczema patients need to learn how they can respond to questions or concerns about their condition in a comfortable manner and teaching the general public that these conditions are not contagious, will better protect these patient's self esteem and confidence.
